It was good fun to talk to Nick
Talbot who is a newly minted Indophile. For him, the friendliness and
acceptance of Indian society has helped
his family and him become part of this vast diversity. In an interesting and
eclectic conversation we spoke about urban housing, transportation, innovation,
sustainability and his view of the Indian future.
Nick Talbot, the Design Head of the
Tata Elexi, has moved to Bangalore from London. For him, the defining quality
of India is the sheer optimism that exists amongst ordinary people. In India,
he believes, innovation is a part of life. “Necessity is the mother of
innovation” he said, but innovation in India has moved beyond that. Terms such
as sustainability or recycling which are now being talked about in the west,
have always been a part of the Indian ethos. He finds the pool of talent in
India to be vast. He believes that the Indian consumer is driven by the desire
for quality and looks for the cost advantage. Innovation will be driven by this.
He is optimistic about India because Indians are optimistic about India.
