Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of the WPP group- the world's largest communication services group - dropped into the India Adda on two consecutive days for chai and conversations. We were chatting about whether the India story was gloom and doom, after much of the reportage in the Indian media seemed to suggest that it was. he laughed
'I think it is overdone.... the media love to have things in extremes. So if you have written the story up, you have to write the story down.....the best thing about having something negative written about you, is that probably the next story will be positive.'
He says that India is not an Emerging market, it has already emerged. And, in his opinion, it is a Fast growing market. He said (of the current growth rates)
"This has been going on in India since the 1990's.....and you have to look at it as a continuum. nothing grows like this (a straight upward line) ....everything is cyclical. The great thing about India is that there is a secular trend upwards.
Sir Martin sees growth across the board in all sectors in India. This statement is based on the fact that WPP, in India, works across sectors fulfilling their communication requirements. His company grew at 15% last year. The one thing he would like to see improved in India is the Infrastructure. Improved infrastructure, he believes, will improve many other things.
Brand India to Sir Martin
...Intellect is the first word that pops into mind. ....If our businesses outside India were as good as our businesses inside India, I could retire..
